Washington, D.C. — The White House and several surrounding government buildings were placed on lockdown on Wednesday following a shooting incident near the presidential residence that left two National Guard members injured.

Initial reports from West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey indicated that the troops had been killed, but he later retracted the statement, saying he was receiving “conflicting reports” about their conditions.

“We are now receiving conflicting reports about the condition of our two Guard members and will provide additional updates once we receive more complete information,” the governor posted on X. He added that prayers were with the affected service members, their families, and the wider National Guard community.

At the time of the incident, President Donald Trump was at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Palm Beach, Florida. According to White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, the President had been fully briefed on the situation and was monitoring developments closely.

“The White House is aware and actively monitoring this tragic situation. The President has been briefed,” Leavitt said in a statement.

The Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia confirmed that a suspect in the shooting had been taken into custody.

National Guard personnel have been deployed in Washington, D.C. in recent months to support President Trump’s ongoing anti-crime initiative in the U.S. capital.

Reacting to the incident on his Truth Social platform, President Trump described the attacker in strong terms, stating that the individual, who was also wounded, “will pay a very steep price.”

Further details about the condition of the injured service members are expected as authorities continue their investigation.
