The Managing Director/CEO of Lagos State Ferry Services ( LAGFERRY), Hon. AbdoulBaq Ladi Balogun, has said the blue economy sector gets its blueprint from Lagos.
Balogun stated that Lagos has meticulously developed the blue economy over the years, adding that the blueprint was contained in the Strategic Transport Master Plan (STMP) created in 2002 by President Bola Tinubu when he was governor of the state.
He made these assertions while speaking with journalists on Sunday at the ‘Love Waterways Edition’ and ‘Live Viewing of the 2023 AFCON Final Match’ held at Five Coweries Terminal in Ikoyi, Lagos.
Speaking on the security of the participants, Balogun said all neccessary security and safety measures were in place, saying that relevant security agencies were involved in the planning and execution of the event
He said the cruising and sailing on waterways was to boost waterways tourism in Lagos, adding that Nigerians need to be sensitized on the benefits and advantages of the water transportation system.
” This is Lagos, Lagos is Life. We are celebrating love and we are celebrating football. Today has been set aside to celebrate love in the spirit of valentine and to celebrate Super Eagles for qualifying for the AFCON final.
” The truth is that waterways system of transportation is the best and safest mode of transportation all over the world. God blesses Lagos with this and one third of the state is covered by water and the state is making use of it. The potential is so huge as we are having a social event on the waterways. Tommorrow it can be cargo movement, next tomorrow it can be movement of people from one place to another. The benefits are huge”, said Balogun.
The MD acknowledged that waterways is the safest among transportation systems, saying that there had been increase in the usage and patronage of the waterways.
Some of those who witnessed the cruising were celebrities like Mercy Aigbe and her husband, Kazeem Adeoti, Foluke Daramola, Seyi Law, Isaac and Nneka Moses of the GogeAfrica, amongst others.
