The United States military has revealed the deployment of some forces to Nigeria in a collaborative operation between Washington and Abuja to tackle terrorism and insecurity.
Reuters reports that the commander of the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), General Dagvin R.M. Anderson, made the disclosure on Tuesday.
Anderson stated that an agreement was reached between Nigeria and the United States on the need for closer military collaboration to bolster counter-terrorism operations.
While not revealing the exact size and details of the mission of the deployed team, he called it a small contingent with “unique capabilities” provided by the United States.
“That has led to increased collaboration between our nations to include a small US team that brings some unique capabilities from the United States,” Anderson shared.
The development marks the first official acknowledgement of US forces in Nigeria since airstrikes were conducted by Washington in December 2025.
Militant groups were targeted in the airstrikes after US intelligence flight operations in the country.
