The United States Consulate hosted an exclusive reception in honor of the 17th Headies Awards at the Consular Residence on Modupe Alakija Crescent, Ikoyi, Lagos, on Thursday.
Speaking at the event, the Honourable Commissioner for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, expressed her excitement and pleasure that the Headies had returned to Lagos, reaffirming the city’s status as Nigeria’s entertainment hub.
She reiterated the commitment of the Lagos State Government, under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s leadership, to develop and elevate the creative industry.
Mrs. Benson-Awoyinka emphasized the state’s role in facilitating the return of the prestigious award ceremony to its home base.
The U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Richard Mills Jr., conveyed his appreciation to the Lagos State Government for its continued backing of the creative sector.
He highlighted the partnership between U.S. firms and the Nigerian music industry, recognizing the global acclaim of Nigerian artists such as Burna Boy and Tems.
The Ambassador also praised the founder of the Headies, Mr. Ayo Animasaun, for his tenacity, dedication, and commitment to hosting the event annually.
Additionally, he spoke about the ongoing collaborative efforts between the U.S. and Nigeria to support musical development, including initiatives that have provided training opportunities for young Nigerian creatives in the United States.
In his address, Mr. Ayo Animasaun conveyed his heartfelt gratitude to the Lagos State Government and other principal sponsors, emphasizing that their backing enabled the successful organization of the Headies Awards.
The ceremony featured dynamic performances by various musical artists, including Beriola and Joel Brown.
A pivotal moment of the evening was the premiere performance of popular entrepreneur and Cubana Chief Priest’s latest single, performed in collaboration with Joel Brown.
Notable attendees included the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Mr. Olanrewaju Bajulaiye; celebrated actor Femi Adebayo; and other influential figures in the Nigerian music industry.
