The Flamingos, Nigeria’s Under-17 female national team, have recorded their first win at the ongoing World Cup in India, beating New Zealand 4-0 on Friday afternoon, October 14.

The Flamingos bounced back from their 2-1 loss to Germany in the opening game of the tournament in India, by thrashing New Zealand 4-0 in their second group game.

The Nigerian girls went into the game with intensity after losing their first game against Germany. The Flamingos knew that beating New Zealand was their only hope of remaining in the competition.

New Zealand also suffered a defeat in their first game against Chile, losing 3-1, and the loss against Nigeria means they have crashed out of the tournament.

The Flamingos started the match with flurry of attacks in an attempt to score an early goal, but all their efforts were futile due to an impressive New Zealand defensive display.

Aminat Omowunmi Bello scored the first goal for Nigeria in the 16th minute after benefiting from an assist by Ajakaye.

In the 34th minute, defender Usani headed home the second goal for Nigeria. The first half ended with the West Africans leading 2-0.

Ajakaye scored the third goal for Nigeria in the 75th minute, before Edidiong Etim netted the 4th at the death, for the Flamingos to record an emphatic 4-0 win.
