Tinubu Reaffirms Commitment to Democracy, Rule of Law

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening democracy and upholding the rule of law in Nigeria, describing both as enduring pillars for the nation’s unity and stability.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening democracy and upholding the rule of law in Nigeria, describing both as enduring pillars for the nation’s unity and stability.

Speaking on Wednesday during an interfaith Iftar with members of the National Working Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and leaders of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, the President said his government would protect democratic principles as a lasting legacy.

Tinubu emphasised that strong internal democracy within political parties is essential for building credible electoral institutions and processes. He noted that adopting direct primaries would give party members greater opportunity to choose their representatives at different levels of governance.

Responding to remarks by IPAC Chairman, Yusuf Dantalle, the President reflected on Nigeria’s democratic journey, describing himself as a lifelong advocate of democratic ideals.

“I am a die-hard democrat. Some of us were bruised in the struggle for democracy—we were detained, protested on the streets, and even went into exile. We formed National Democratic Coalition to fight for it. That belief in a united Nigeria will live and die with me,” he said.

Tinubu assured party leaders that there would be no threat to democratic freedoms under his watch, stressing that the rule of law must always prevail.

“The majority will have their way, and the minority will have their say. That is the essence and sweetness of democracy,” he added.

The President also pledged to uphold free and fair elections, noting that he remains a registered voter and a committed member of his political platform.

Earlier, APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda praised Tinubu for his leadership and for effectively managing Nigeria’s diversity and resources. He also assured the President of the ruling party’s continued support in delivering his administration’s vision for the country.

Meanwhile, IPAC Chairman Dantalle appealed to the President to reconsider making the National Identity Number (NIN) compulsory for voter registration under the new 2026 Electoral Law. He warned that the requirement could disenfranchise many eligible voters.

Dantalle also urged the restoration of financial support previously provided by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to political parties.

He further disclosed that a documentary marking 26 years of democracy in Nigeria, titled “Unbroken Democracy,” has been produced with the support of Hope Uzodimma, chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum, and will soon premiere at the State House.

The statement was issued by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, on March 11, 2026.
