NIGERIA – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a significant salary increase for personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces, with pay rises ranging from 30 to 80 per cent, in a move aimed at boosting troop welfare and strengthening the country’s security architecture.
The new salary structure, which takes effect from September 1, 2026, will benefit approximately 250,000 military personnel across the Army, Navy and Air Force.
Under the approved package, officers above the rank of Colonel—including Brigadier-Generals, Major-Generals, Lieutenant-Generals and Generals—will receive a 30 per cent salary increase.
Officers from the rank of Colonel down to Warrant Officer will enjoy a 50 per cent increase, while personnel from Private to Staff Sergeant will receive the highest adjustment of 80 per cent.
The salary review will raise the annual wage bill for members of the Armed Forces from ₦660 billion to ₦924 billion, reflecting the Federal Government’s renewed commitment to improving the welfare of military personnel.
President Tinubu said the salary enhancement is in recognition of the courage, patriotism and sacrifices of the nation’s servicemen and women who continue to confront terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other security challenges across the country.
“The men and women who help to keep us safe in our homes must be supported and appreciated in the course of their duties to our nation,” the President said.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to prioritising the welfare of troops while continuing to modernise the Armed Forces through the provision of advanced weapons, equipment and technological tools required to effectively discharge their constitutional responsibilities.
According to the President, national security remains the foundation for sustainable development and economic prosperity.
“Our administration believes that no nation can achieve greatness without security. We therefore remain resolute in mobilising all military and law enforcement assets to eliminate security threats and protect the lives and property of all Nigerians,” he stated.
President Tinubu urged members of the Armed Forces to regard the salary increase as a demonstration of the nation’s appreciation for their dedication and service.
“I urge our servicemen to take our gesture as a sign of our deep appreciation of the services they render to our fatherland. Together, we shall prevail over the enemies intent on destroying the fabric of our nation,” he added.
