NSF: Lagos dominates badminton competition

The Lagos State team has retained its title as the best badminton playing State in Nigeria after emerging as the overall winner of the event at the 20th National Sports Festival tagged Edo 2020.

According to a statement issued by the Executive Chairman of the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC), Mr. Sola Aiyepeku, Lagos claimed the highest number of gold medals to beat Delta and Edo in the event in spite of the addition of team events to the competition.

According to him, “Anuoluwapo Opeyori and Godwin Olofua spearheaded Lagos’ dominance in the men’s team, singles and doubles events, which fetched the State three gold and one silver medals”.

He said Opeyori claimed gold in the singles after defeating Olofua in the finals, while the duo paired to win the doubles event, adding that Opeyori and Olofua were also part of the men’s team that claimed the gold medal.

“With this outing, Lagos continues its dominance of badminton in Nigeria while the women’s event was won by Delta through the former Lagos’ Athlete, Yemisi Olatunji”, the Executive Chairman stated.

Aiyepeku averred that the State gold medalist in the taekwondo event, Abdulateef Arinola, dedicated his achievement to the coaches and officials for their support and encouragement to the members of the Lagos team at the festival.
