SSANU, NASU vow to continue strike despite partial payment

The Joint Action Committee of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities and Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities and Allied Institutions on Saturday revealed that the Federal Government only released one out of the four months withheld salaries.

The Joint Action Committee of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities and Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities and Allied Institutions on Saturday revealed that the Federal Government only released one out of the four months withheld salaries.

The Office of the Accountant General of the Federation on Saturday said that it had released the withheld salaries for which the university workers embarked on strike.

The unions, under JAC, began an indefinite strike on Monday due to four months of unpaid salaries, leading to a shutdown of university activities nationwide.

SSANU National President Mohammed Ibrahim noted that top university officials, including Vice-Chancellors, bursars, and registrars, also hadn’t been paid, further impacting university operations.

He added that 98 per cent of members complied with the strike, and they would not return to work until their demands are met.

Speaking with our correspondent, the chairman of the SSANU and JAC, Muhammed Ibrahim, though confirmed that members had started receiving salaries, noted that only one out of the four months withheld salaries has been released.

“Yes, they paid one month out of four months. We shall be meeting to appraise the situation. Not everyone has received so far.”
