Six suspected hoodlums nabbed for attacking policeman with machetes

Doctors are currently battling to save the life of the officer at a hospital he was rushed to in Lagos.

Police identified the arrested suspects as Taiwo Ogunsakin, 48; Waheed Suleiman, 25; Sunday Aferuan, 37; and Walid Ramon, 23.

Others included Kilo Bamidele, 38, and Jamiu Yakubu, 25.

The incident occurred on 15 April, 2022 when the Assistant Inspector General of Police, AIG in charge of Zone 2 Command, Lagos deployed the victim and his team to Atabaje/Akerele area of Agege, Lagos to arrest the robbery suspect Wahab Yusuf alleged to be terrorizing and robbing residents following a complaint.

According to the police, the team succeeded in arresting the suspect and that as they made to take the suspect away to the station, the arrested suspects in their number came out from their hideout and descended on the police team with cutlasses and other dangerous weapons and inflicted machete cuts on the complainant on his head and other parts of the body which led the robbery suspect, Yusuf to escaped with handcuff.

The Police team, however, succeeded in arresting the six suspected hoodlums in the ensuing confusion for attacking police officers with cutlasses and aiding a robbery suspect to escape.

The arrested suspects were charged before the Tinubu Magistrate’s Court, Lagos on a five-count charge of conspiracy, assault occasioning bodily harm, attempt to kill a police officer on lawful duty and aiding a suspect to escape.

The police prosecuting counsel, ASP Ibrahim Haruna told the court in the charge marked W/30/2022 that the defendants committed the offence at the Atabaje area of Agege, Lagos.

Haruna informed the court that the defendants took the law into their hands and attacked a police team on lawful duty with cutlasses and other dangerous weapons and aided the suspect the police arrested to escape with handcuffs.

He said the offences the defendants committed were punishable under sessions 411, 173, 117(1) and 174(d) of the Criminal Law of Lagos 2015.

The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges and Magistrate Alogba granted them N300,000 bail each with two sureties each in like sum.

Alogba adjourned the case till 11 May, 2022 for mention and ordered that the defendants be kept at the Ikoyi correctional facility till they perfected their bail conditions.
