Senegal’s President, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, has been elected the new Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
Faye emerged as chairman on Sunday during the 69th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government held in Freetown, Sierra Leone, where regional leaders gathered to deliberate on key political, economic and security issues affecting West Africa.
His election comes at a pivotal moment for the 15-member regional bloc, which continues to grapple with terrorism, political instability, economic integration and efforts to redefine relations with Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger following their withdrawal from ECOWAS.
At 45, Faye is one of Africa’s youngest presidents. A former tax inspector, he won Senegal’s 2024 presidential election on an anti-establishment platform that promised sweeping political and economic reforms, anti-corruption measures and greater national sovereignty.
His victory followed a period of political tension in Senegal, during which he and his political mentor, Ousmane Sonko, were detained before being released ahead of the election.
Since assuming office in April 2024, Faye has pursued reforms aimed at improving governance, creating jobs, strengthening public institutions and repositioning Senegal’s economy.
He has also advocated deeper African cooperation, fairer international partnerships and stronger regional integration.
As ECOWAS chairman, Faye is expected to spearhead efforts to strengthen regional cooperation, restore democratic governance, combat terrorism and violent extremism, deepen economic integration and promote dialogue to address the political challenges confronting the sub-region.
His leadership will also be closely watched as ECOWAS seeks to rebuild unity and chart a new course for regional cooperation amid evolving geopolitical and security dynamics in West Africa.
