Segun Dawodu extols Contribution of Social Workers to Family Integration

… Says Social Workers Deserve Better Treatment

Lagos State Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mr. Segun Dawodu has acknowledged the roles played by social workers globally, saying that their contributions are responsible for societal integration and harmony enjoyed in most homes.

Dawodu, who disclosed this in his address to participants at the celebration of the Y2020 International Social Work Day in Lagos, stated that it was practically impossible for any society to exist without these sets of professionals.

According to him, the indispensable roles of social workers in ensuring stability in our society cannot be overemphasised, stressing that the role played by social workers is being underrated in the society

The Commissioner, therefore, advocated for better treatment and provision of good welfare packages for social workers in view of their enormous selfless responsibilities.

In his words, “If we consider the enormity of tasks usually undertaken by social workers for the most vulnerable, like the motherless and elderly, which they do with a lot of passion, we would realise that they are actually rendering essential services to humanity”.

While advising new entrants into the profession not to despair in the face of the prevailing circumstances, Dawodu disclosed that he has taken it upon himself to ensure that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu prioritises issues affecting the welfare of social workers.

The President, National Association of Social Workers (NASoW), Alhaji Moshood Mustapha appreciated the staff of the Ministry of Youth and Social Development for their selfless service to humanity, emphasising the need for them to earn the respect of society through professional competence.

In her contribution, Chairman of National Social Workers, NASoW, Lagos Chapter, Mrs. Adetoun Ogedengbe, commended the Commissioner for the laudable initiatives he has introduced since assumption of office.

The year 2020 Social Workers Day, themed “Promoting Importance of Human Relations”, was celebrated with a fitness walk tagged ‘Walk for Life’ and lectures on topics geared towards enhancing the professional competence of social workers in the Ministry.
