The Lagos State Office of Education Quality Assurance (OEQA) has organised a virtual Professional Development Workshop series for OEQA Evaluators and School Leaders to improve on the three core series of Quality Assurance Essentials, Quality of Teaching and Learning, as well as Quality of Leadership in Public and Private Schools.
Speaking at the event, the Director-General, OEQA, Mrs. Abiola Seriki-Ayeni, said the Education Quality Assurance supplement handbook (2021) will be used alongside the Federal Government Education Quality Assurance handbook to upskill school leadership with the aim of improving schools for sustainable learning outcomes in the State.
Mrs. Seriki-Ayeni added that the OEQA adopted a train-the-trainer approach for school leaders to tailor their knowledge alongside the need of their schools and also cascade the experience down to others, urging them to take ownership of their progress and development.
She urged schools’ management to conduct a self-check through the School Self Evaluation (SSE) before OEQA evaluators visit their schools for Whole School Evaluation (WSE), stressing that it will afford them the opportunity to accurately assess themselves towards proffering solutions for quality education delivery.
In view of the need for supportive measures for Families, Educators and Schools in the delivery of qualitative education, Mrs. Seriki-Ayeni, disclosed that learning resources for all categories of classes can be accessed on www.lagoslearnstogether.com free of charge, adding that various webinars and seminars required for distance learning can also be found on the website.
While noting that steps to effective School Self Evaluation (SSE) have been identified to include the setting of Goals, Timeline, Evidence Submission and Review of Evidence for feedback, the Director-General reiterated that “the aim of the school evaluation is to determine if a school is doing very well, performing on average level or at a poor state and needs to do more”.
She, therefore, implored evaluators and school leaders to take note of the three core areas of requirements, namely: standard teaching and learning; leadership and management as well as other sub-standard areas such as quality of learning environment and personal skills as well as participation because they are the pillars on which the Whole School Evaluation (WES) is built.
Mrs. Seriki-Ayeni also urged the participants to build their self-evaluation team, include lesson plans and curriculum in their evidence and be sure to interpret evidence with data for clarity.
