LAGOS — Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has carried out an on-the-spot inspection of the Alakija-Festac Bridge following a viral video showing suspected scavengers allegedly removing metal components from the bridge structure.
The Governor’s visit came after concerns were raised over the safety and structural integrity of the bridge, which links Festac Town and the Alakija axis along the Lagos-Badagry corridor.
During the inspection, Sanwo-Olu assessed the affected areas and assured residents and motorists that the bridge remains safe, structurally sound and fit for use.
In a statement shared on his official Facebook page after the inspection, the Governor said the state government had moved swiftly to secure the facility following the attempted vandalism.
“Earlier today, I inspected the Alakija Bridge following an attempt by vandals to damage part of the structure.
“Let me reassure Lagosians that the bridge is safe, structurally sound and ready for use. There is no cause for alarm.”
Sanwo-Olu commended the security agencies and enforcement teams for their prompt response, specifically acknowledging the Police, Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Lagos State Task Force, Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) and the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps.
According to the Governor, some of the suspects involved in the alleged vandalism have already been arrested, while security agencies are continuing efforts to apprehend others who may have participated in the act.
He warned that the state government would not tolerate the destruction of public infrastructure, stressing that anyone found attempting to vandalise government facilities would face the full force of the law.
The Governor also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the Lagos-Badagry Expressway corridor, noting that the ongoing clean-up exercise is already producing visible improvements.
“We are also keeping our commitment to the Lagos-Badagry Expressway corridor. The ongoing clean-up is already making a visible difference, and the work will continue,” he stated.
Sanwo-Olu urged Lagosians to remain vigilant and join government efforts to protect public infrastructure, stressing that safeguarding the state’s facilities is a collective responsibility.
“We all have a role to play in keeping Lagos safe and protecting what belongs to all of us,” the Governor added.
