The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has demanded the immediate suspension of the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Tijani Fatai, for attending an event organised to promote President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.
Fatai was seen in viral videos arriving at Tuesday’s inauguration of the Lagos chapter of the City Boy Movement in Ikeja, where he exchanged pleasantries with members of the group.
The movement, which attracted political leaders, traditional rulers, youth representatives and members of the All Progressives Congress, pledged to mobilise grassroots support for Tinubu’s second-term ambition.
Reacting on X, the NDC condemned Fatai’s appearance at the gathering, describing it as partisan and damaging to the neutrality expected of the police.
“We condemn in the strongest terms the appearance of the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani, at a partisan event promoting a particular candidate in the upcoming general election,” the party said.
The NDC accused the APC-led government of showing little regard for public institutions, insisting that the commissioner’s conduct had raised doubts about his ability to act impartially during the elections.
“Seeing a Commissioner of Police at a partisan event can only point to one thing: he will be biased in the discharge of his duties during the elections,” it declared.
The party consequently called on the Nigeria Police Force to suspend and sanction Fatai immediately it also demanded that the police commit to political neutrality and protect voters and supporters of opposition candidates during the elections.
The NDC further urged the police to safeguard every voter, irrespective of religion, ethnicity or political affiliation.
“Finally, we demand that the Lagos State Commissioner of Police tender his resignation immediately for denigrating the institution of the Police,” the party added.
The Lagos State Police Command had yet to respond to the allegations at the time of filing this report.
