Chief Robert Clarke, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), has said that President Muhammadu Buhari is permitted to serves as president after spending more than eight years in office.

In a recent interview on Arise News, the elder statesman explained how the stay can be constitutionally extended.

Discussing the issue, Robert Clark said, “I have had the best time of my life in every aspect of life, but those days have passed. Since 1999, I have not been a happy man due to the way the country was moving. We started with a president who tried to seek a third term in office. We started by looking for loopholes to breach the constitution. I do not see any green light for the country if we are not careful.

He continued, “The only consolation is that the constitution provides that the president can stay longer than eight years, and I have often said so. If our present situation continues, and makes it impossible for the 2023 election to take place, the constitution says if such a situation persists, the president can tell INEC that a good election cannot be held in the areas ravaged by crime, insecurity, and insurgency. The Nigerian constitution permits the president to continuously extend his stay in office for 6 months if the situation persists. I do not see how the present situation can be stopped before the next general election. The alternative may be for President Muhammadu Buhari to continue as president and allow the armed forces to mop up the situation until the country becomes stable.
