Asisat Oshoala’s first-half strike proved decisive as the Super Falcons of Nigeria battled to a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Zambia in a crucial Group C encounter at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), reigniting their title defence.
Oshoala put Nigeria ahead in the 8th minute, calmly finishing to hand the nine-time African champions an early advantage.
The match took a dramatic turn just before halftime when defender Blessing Demehin was shown a straight red card in the 40th minute for a foul on Zambia’s dangerous forward, Barbra Banda, leaving the Super Falcons to play the remainder of the contest with 10 players.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, Nigeria displayed remarkable resilience and defensive discipline. Goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie produced a series of outstanding saves, while the backline stood firm against relentless pressure from the Copper Queens to preserve the slim lead.
The vital victory is Nigeria’s first of the tournament following their opening defeat to Malawi and significantly boosts the Super Falcons’ hopes of advancing to the knockout stage as they continue their quest for a record-extending WAFCON title.
