Onigbongbo Local Council Development Area (LCDA), in partnership with PAKAM and with full support from the Office of the Special Adviser on Climate Change & Circular Economy, Lagos State Government, has officially unveiled the Eco-Circulate Onigbongbo Waste-to-Wealth Initiative — a major step toward sustainable development and economic empowerment at the grassroots.
The initiative is designed to turn everyday waste disposal into a rewarding, value-driven activity that promotes environmental cleanliness while providing economic benefits to residents.
Under the programme, registered waste collectors — backed by interest-free loans and equipped with modern electric vehicle (EV) tricycles — will purchase recyclable materials directly from homes and business premises. The recyclables are then conveyed to designated recycling hubs through a clean, efficient, zero-emission process.
Residents can redeem their recyclables in exchange for several incentives, including:
Cash payments, Bags of rice, Mobile airtime and recharge cards, Cowry cards and bus passes, and Other essential household items.
Speaking at the announcement, the Executive Chairman of Onigbongbo LCDA, Hon. Moyosore Adebanjo, said:
“This is more than a waste management programme; it is a deliberate strategy to merge environmental responsibility with economic empowerment. For the first time in our history, cleanliness is being directly rewarded with tangible benefits that put money and essential goods back into the pockets of our people.”
Key Objectives of the Eco-Circulate Initiative
1. Create sustainable jobs and new income opportunities for collectors and households
2. Promote a recycling culture and drastically reduce street waste
3. Integrate circular economy principles into local governance
4. Deploy eco-friendly EV tricycles for cleaner and faster collection
5. Provide direct economic incentives to residents who sort and sell recyclables
The programme will be formally launched during the Mega Empowerment Programme on Friday, 5 December 2025, where thousands of residents are expected to witness this landmark step in environmental and economic innovation.
