The Executive Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has asked members of the technical crew of the Super Falcons to step down with immediate effect.
“The Executive Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation has asked members of the technical crew of the Super Falcons to step down with immediate effect,” the NFF said in a terse post on its official X handle on Monday evening.
The decision comes eight days after Nigeria were knocked out of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after losing 1-0 to rivals Cameroon in a quarter-final match on August 8, 2026.
The defeat saw the female national team lose automatic qualification for the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil the Super Falcons also lost 2-1 to South Africa in the play-off.
The Falcons began their 2026 WAFCON campaign in Group C with a defeat by debutants Malawi, who went on to reach the final, where they lost to Cameroon on Sunday.
The 10-time title holders and defending champions had another opportunity to secure their place at the World Cup through a playoff against Banyana Banyana of South Africa but failed to win the match.
The outcome leaves Nigeria facing another route in its bid to reach the World Cup, while the NFF has now ordered the technical crew to step down.
The Super Falcons technical crew is led by Head Coach, Justin Madugu, who apologised to Nigerians and accepted responsibility after the team failed to qualify for the World Cup.
Madugu, who was appointed by the NFF in November 2021, is supported by key assistants and backroom staff members.
The women’s World Cup miss was received with displeasure from Nigerian football fans, especially as the Super Eagles had also failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup that was jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Consequently, the NFF said it had instituted a probe into the failure of the women’s national team to qualify for the 2027 World Cup.
