Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi has spoken about his leadership role and Nigeria’s ambitions ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which kicks off on Sunday in Morocco.
Ndidi, who now wears the armband following the retirement of former captain William Troost-Ekong, arrived in Fez on Thursday with the rest of the Nigerian squad as preparations intensify for their Group C opener against Tanzania on Tuesday.
Speaking on the responsibility of leading the team, the Besiktas midfielder described the captaincy as a major task that requires unity and collective effort.
“It’s a huge responsibility, and with the help of the players I think everything will go smoothly,” Ndidi said. “I’ve had conversations with some of the senior players to help everyone understand why we are here. We also need the support of the coaching staff. We’re all in this together, and it’s important that we’re on the same page.”
Ndidi paid tribute to Troost-Ekong, who retired from international football just weeks before the tournament, praising his leadership and influence within the squad.
“He speaks for the team and stands up for everyone. He’s someone a lot of players look up to,” Ndidi said. “I admire how outspoken he is and how he encourages everyone. I’ve learned a lot from him, and we still talk. I feel like he’s still part of the team and he will be missed.”
The new captain also addressed Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, describing it as a painful setback but one that has strengthened the team’s resolve heading into AFCON.
“Missing out on the World Cup was sad, but this is another opportunity,” he said. “It’s a chance to correct our mistakes, put smiles on Nigerians’ faces and make the country proud again. It won’t be easy, but we’re ready for the challenge.”
Nigeria, three-time African champions, are drawn in Group C alongside Tunisia, Tanzania and Uganda, and will be aiming to secure a fourth continental title on Moroccan soil.
