Mushin Local Government has commemorated World Asthma Day 2026 with a community-focused health outreach, offering free lung function tests and sensitising residents on the prevention and management of asthma and other respiratory diseases.
The initiative, held in collaboration with the Integrated Tuberculosis and Respiratory Care in Africa (ITARA) and the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR), aligns with this year’s theme on equitable access to diagnosis and treatment.
Speaking at the event, the Executive Chairman of Mushin Local Government, Hon. Tunbosun Haruna Aruwe, said the outreach was designed to raise awareness, encourage early diagnosis, and reduce deaths associated with asthma and related conditions.
He stressed the importance of proactive healthcare and community engagement in addressing respiratory illnesses. According to him, asthma remains a major public health concern, and the partnership underscores the council’s commitment to reducing the burden of respiratory diseases, improving quality of life, and expanding access to essential health services.
Aruwe reaffirmed the council’s dedication to strengthening healthcare delivery and promoting preventive medical initiatives across the local government.
Also speaking, Prof. Uju Ozoh and Dr. Ogundare Adewale, representing ITARA, educated residents on asthma as a chronic respiratory condition that can lead to increased morbidity and mortality if not properly managed. They highlighted that effective treatment, proper use of smart inhalers, and regular medical checks can significantly improve outcomes. Residents at the event also benefited from free medical screenings and practical tools for managing asthma.
In his remarks, the Vice Chairman and Supervisor for Health, Hon. Karaole Ishola Semiu, commended NIHR and ITARA for their support in promoting awareness, early diagnosis, and access to preventive care.
He urged residents to take full advantage of the outreach by knowing their health status, monitoring their condition, and seeking professional medical advice for proper diagnosis and treatment.
