Man, 26, Faces Trial Over Alleged Assault

A 26-year-old man, Sumbo Oyedele, appeared before an Ikorodu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Monday for allegedly beating up a woman.

Oyedele, whose address was not provided, is facing a three-count charge, bordering on unlawful damage and stealing.

He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Prosecutor, Sgt. Mary Ajiteru told the court that the defendant committed the offences on Aug. 17 at Owode Ajegunle in Ikorodu.

Ajiteru alleged that the defendant conducts himself in a manner likely to cause a breach of the peace when he beat up one Mrs Fatima Olayinka and destroyed goods worth N200,000.

She said the defendant also stole one Itel phone, valued at N9, 000 and N75, 000 cash, belonging to the complainant.

Ajiteru said the offences contravened Sections 172, 339(1) and 287 of Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 stipulates three years jail term for stealing.

The Magistrate, Mrs C.K. Tunji-Careena, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N25, 000 with one surety in like sum.

She adjourned the case until Sept. 5 for mention.
