The Local Government Service Commission (LGSC) and the Local Government Establishments, Training and Pensions (LGET&P) jointly organised a one-day management retreat for staff at the Celebration Gardens International, GRA, Ikeja, Lagos, to increase their level of professionalism and effective discharge of duties.
Speaking at the event, the Chairman – Local Government Service Commission – Mr. Kamal Bayewu, urged the participants to collaborate, work in harmony and desist from “Silos Mentality”, which he described as the unwillingness to share information with coworkers.
Bayewu averred that the programme was designed to bring together all officers in the two establishments as one big family, admonishing them to network and share information effectively in an effort to achieve the set goals of their agencies.
According to him, the retreat is meant to achieve efficient job performance and good service delivery, new proactive initiatives and innovative approaches to problem-solving, policy development, administration and governance.
He explained further that the retreat will also review the activities of the outgoing year and map out strategies for next year while ensuring that staff are enlightened about their achievements, duties and responsibilities for the effective discharge of services.
“All records of information, both from the Local Government Establishments, Training and Pension and Local Government Service Commission, which is the parent body, must at all times denote unity given our primary mandate of managing the career of human resources in the Unified Local Government Service across the State”, the Chairman asserted.
Reiterating the need to keep up a unified spirit, especially as it concerns working relationships, data collation and other vital exchanges of information for better service delivery, Bayewu enjoined all officers to develop a modern mindset that is customer-centric and service-oriented with a rightful outlook to provide support within the third tier of government.
Earlier in her welcome address, the Permanent Secretary, Local Government Establishments, Training and Pensions, Mrs. Kikelomo Bolariwa, noted that the annual retreat is meant for staff to re-strategise, rejuvenate, wine, dine and interact freely.
Noting that the retreat was convened to get the staff acquainted with the task ahead, the Permanent Secretary charged the participants to be dedicated to duty, adding that the retreat is not only for leisure but to also serve as an avenue to plan for next year.
On his part, Mr. Abiodun Bamgboye, Permanent Secretary, Local Government Service Commission, reiterated the need for all officers to do away with the “Silos Mentality”, admonishing them to collaborate in order to maintain the integrity of the two agencies.
An educative talk on “Urban Resilience of the Lagos City” was delivered by Dr. Folayinka Dania, the Chief Resilience Officer of Lagos State Resilience Office (LASRO).
Dania encouraged all participants to tap into the readiness of the Lagos State Government to retool and reboot the system’s new technology towards meeting up with the State’s human population projections for better economic sustainability and growth.
Other dignitaries present at the retreat were Engr. Abiodun Orekoya, Commissioner (Ikorodu Division); Mr. Hakeem Bamgbola, Commissioner (Lagos Division); Mr. Ahmed Seriki, Commissioner (Epe Division) and Mr. Taofeek Adaranijo Commissioner (Ikeja Division).
