LASUCON introduces Coconut processing entrepreneurship Course for Nurses

The Lagos State College of Nursing (LASUCON), Igando, has incorporated training on ‘Processing of Edible Coconut By-Products’ offered by the Lagos State Coconut Development Authority (LASCODA) into its Entrepreneurship Skills Development Course for Nurses.

Speaking during the presentation of the approved training proposal to LASCODA, the Provost of LASCON, Mrs. Oyefunso Orenuga, said the initiative is aimed at empowering the students in human capacity development in addition to their medical certification.

She said the training of the student nurses by LASCODA is going to be on yearly basis and is geared towards the promotion of skills for producing coconut by-products indigenous to Lagos State, stressing that the initiative will go a long way in the creation of alternative sources of income for the students after graduation.

The Provost applauded the inter-agency collaboration between LASCON and LASCODA, appealing to other tertiary institutions in Lagos State to incorporate training on Coconut Value Chain into their respective entrepreneurship skills training courses.

Her words: “The partnership with LASCODA will ensure that the students are able to cope with real-life experience after school which always calls for multiple sources of income”.

“The incorporation of Coconut Value Chain into the Entrepreneurship Course of Nurses is all about creating other sources of wealth, through training in hands-on skills with emphasis on the entrepreneurship mind-set. This initiative is expected to lay emphasis on the health benefits of coconut, considering the target audience (Nurses), which will also be of great importance and complement their Nursing profession”, Mrs. Orenuga added.

In his remarks, the General Manager of LASCODA, Mr. Dapo Olakulehin, thanked the entire management and staff of LASCON for incorporating training on Coconut processing into the entrepreneurship course for Nurses, stating that the Y2020 edition has been scheduled to come up between Monday, 15th and Friday, 19th March 2021, at the Farm Service Centre, Oko-Oba, Agege and will commence with the 2018 Nursing Students Set.

He emphasised that the training will be 90% practical and 10% theory with modules such as, Basic Principle of Food Value Chain Enterprises, Generic Steps in Processing of Edible Coconut by-products, Health Values of Coconut, Improved Modern Techniques for Coconut Oil Processing (Hot and Virgin), Production of Coconut Flakes and Crisps, Packaging and Marketing Strategy for Edible Coconut Products and Common Coconut Recipes among others.
