… As General Manager Leads Statewide Greening Campaign
The Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency (LASPARK) has announced the successful planting of 19,875 trees across the state over the last year, reshaping urban spaces and promoting a culture of sustainability.
This record was achieved by LASPARK through its flagship campaign, #TreesForLagos, which aims to enhance green infrastructure, improve air quality, and create healthier living environments across all 57 Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas in the state.
According to the General Manager of LASPARK, Mrs. Adetoun Popoola, the campaign goes beyond tree planting. “For us at LASPARK, tree planting isn’t just about the environment, it’s about health, identity, and legacy. We want Lagosians to feel proud of their surroundings and inspired to contribute to them,” she said.
She mentioned that through strategic collaboration with private developers, schools, civil society groups, faith-based institutions, and individuals, the #TreesForLagos campaign has become a citywide movement. Public spaces, highways, estates, schools, and commercial properties have all benefited from the greening initiative.
In her words: “LASPARK’s efforts have also included the introduction of tree-planting activities into school ceremonies, promotion of green building certifications, and the integration of environmental education into community engagements. The project has sparked a wave of volunteerism and civic participation, with residents expressing a renewed sense of ownership and pride in their environment.”
Popoola mentioned that beyond beautification, the environmental benefits from the initiative are far-reaching as the planted trees are expected to contribute to cleaner air, lower urban temperatures, improved flood resilience, and better ecological balance across Lagos.
“With the successful planting of 19,875 trees completed as of July 2025, LASPARK is now focused on the next phase, expanding green corridors, forming community maintenance groups, and introducing nature-based learning into the educational system,” Popoola stated.
The General Manager noted that the agency remains committed to its long-term vision of making Lagos a green, sustainable, and environmentally conscious city. “This is only the beginning. Our goal is to instill a deep-rooted culture of environmental responsibility that will endure for generations”, she added.
