The Lagos State Government on Saturday restated its commitment to continually nurturing platforms that encourage civic participation, youth empowerment, and climate consciousness in Lagos State.
The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab made this known during the Lagos Has Talent competition – Climate Edition, Grand Finale event, saying it is a celebration of innovation, creativity, and youth-led climate advocacy.
The Commissioner, who was represented by the Special Adviser on Environment, Engr. Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu stated that the present administration is committed to creating a Lagos that is not only smart and resilient but also inclusive, creative, and prepared for the future.
He added that the event was a powerful testament to what can be achieved when government, development partners, and passionate youths work together towards a common goal.
She explained that the journey of Lagos Has Talent began in 2023 and was driven by the vision to amplify young voices in the climate space. It gained significant visibility in February 2024 with the unveiling of social media personality Maryam Apaokagi, popularly known as Taooma, as the Youth Influencer for Climate Youth Engagement.
He added that Taooma’s involvement brought authenticity and reach, especially among younger audiences, saying this was followed by the launch of a compelling climate awareness skit, which premiered at the 10th Lagos State International Climate Change Summit, further strengthening the environmental message using relatable storytelling.
“As a government, Lagos remains deeply committed to addressing climate change through our Lagos Climate Action Plan, as well as the Lagos State Climate Adaptation and Resilience Plan (LCARP). We are implementing practical solutions in areas such as waste management, climate adaptation, drainage infrastructure, sustainability, and flood management,” he said.
He emphasised that the government, beyond policies and infrastructure, recognised that the heartbeat of sustainability lies in people, especially the youth.
He said the grand finale is not just the culmination of the competition, it is the amplification of purpose and proof that young Lagosians are not only aware of climate issues, but also ready to be part of the solution using music, poetry, storytelling, and technology to communicate the urgency of climate action in their voices and through their unique lenses.
His words, “To the top five finalists, I congratulate you heartily. You have risen through a rigorous selection process, and today, you stand as ambassadors of creativity, climate awareness, and resilience. Whether you walk away with a prize or not, always remember: your voice matters, your creativity counts, and your journey has only just begun.”
Wahab commended the incredible partners that made the initiative a reality, saying Lagos Has Talent is a flagship youth engagement initiative under the Climate Action Implementation Programme of C40 Cities, supported by UK International Development.
He added that the initiative has also been championed internally by the dedicated officers of the Climate Change and Environmental Planning Department of the Ministry.
