The Lagos State Government has teamed up with the Nigerian Energy Support Programme (NESP) on the adoption of the Building Energy Efficiency Code to enhance Physical Planning in the State.

Speaking during the inauguration of the Technical Working Group (TWG) on the adoption of the Building Energy Efficiency Code (BEEC) for Lagos State in Ikeja at the weekend, the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Idris Salako, said that BEEC is the logical follow up to the Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiency (EDGE) that the Lagos State Government had subscribed to under the aegis of the International Finance Corporation.

He said further the programme would strengthen the resolve to ensure an organised, livable and sustainable physical environment as contained in the T.H.E.M.E.S. Agenda of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu led administration.

Dr. Salako added that the inauguration of the Technical Working Group, comprising professionals from the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development and its Agencies, was a milestone towards adopting the Building Energy Efficiency Code (BEEC).

He urged members of the Technical Working Group to take the assignment with all seriousness and adapt the knowledge gained to their practice for advancement of the built environment of Lagos State and the wellbeing of the people.

On the mandate of the Technical Working Group, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, Engr. Abiola Kosegbe, stated that it would midwife the process of adopting the Building Energy Efficiency Code (BEEC) in Physical Planning Laws of Lagos State and create awareness as well as get the buy-in of stakeholders.

She urged members of the Technical Working Group to work diligently to develop proper codes and standards for Lagos State in tandem with the BEEC.

The Advisor, Energy Efficiency in Buildings, Nigerian Energy Support Programme, Ms. Edima Okodi-Iyah, said: “It is a great initiative for the Lagos State Government to have inaugurated a team of Building Professionals with the capacity to drive the Building Energy Efficiency Code (BEEC) adoption in the State”.

“We believe that the collaboration between the Nigerian Energy Support Programme and Lagos State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development will go a long way in achieving Energy Efficiency of Buildings in Lagos State and contribute further to the socio-economic development of the economic centre of Nigeria”, she added.

Also present at the inauguration were the Special Adviser on Urban Development, Mr. Ganiyu Adele Ayuba; Special Adviser on E-GIS and Lands, Dr. Olajide Babatunde and General Manager, Lagos State Urban Renewal Agency, Ms. Ajibike Shomade.

Others include the General Manager, Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority, Tpl. Kehinde Oshinaike and General Manager, Lagos State Planning and Environmental Monitoring Authority, Tpl. Daisi Oso.
