This according to the DG/CEO LASEMA, Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu in the Preliminary Report, “is to ensure remains of the collapsed building which was under construction before it caved in, does not constitute further danger to people and sorrounding properties in the area”.

Going on in the Report, the DG LASEMA said that the collapsed building had been redmarked by the Lagos State Building Control Agency, LABSCA, that aside exposure to the elements, the building collapsed due to non adherence to recommended standards of the state that led to the Stop Work notice by LABSCA, which was defied by the contractor, before the building collapsed.

Preliminary Report emanating from the Director General’s Office on the collapsed building has it that, “The Agency received a distress call concerning a collapsed building at Olufiditi street, Alaba Oro at about 12:08pm on Sunday, 27th of June, 2021.

“This led to the immediate activation of the Agency’s emergency response plan and necessary deployment of resources to the incident scene.

“Upon arrival of the Agency’s officials (Cobra Team) as well as other stakeholders (Nigeria Police Force, Lagos State Safety Commission and LASBCA) at the incident scene, it was observed that a 3 storey building undergoing construction caved in as a result of a heavy wind as well as substandard building materials.

“Further investigation indicates the presence of LABSCA and that the building had been previously marked for a caution.

“The affected building has been cordoned off while we await the arrival of the Agency’s heavy duty equipment – Excavator, to the scene of the building collapse.

“After which, the collapsed structure that is under construction will be brought down totally for safety of the residents and adjoining buildings.

“No casualties, nor fatalities were recorded”.

In the Preliminary Report, it was recommended that;

“Continuous sensitization and advocacy on necessary safety precautions should be embarked upon by the Agency”.

“Adherence to the building codes of the state should be enforced by relevant Government Agencies”
