Students of Lagos State College of Health Technology (LASCOHET), Yaba, showcased remarkable creativity, advocacy, and depth of understanding at the International World Mental Health Day celebration organised by the International Association of World Peace Advocates to mark the United Nations World Mental Health Day.

The LASCOHET delegation, led by Mr. Dawodu Samson Abiodun of the School of General Studies attended the event on behalf of the Provost of the College,. The celebration brought together global advocates, health professionals, and youth ambassadors to promote awareness and action on mental health issues.

The students thrilled the audience with a captivating 15-member cast drama titled: “Mental Health Awareness Day: Care for the Mind”. The presentation explored the importance of empathy, early diagnosis, and care for individuals experiencing mental distress. It received a standing ovation for its creativity and emotional depth.

This was followed by a symbolic 10-member tableau drama in which performers wore vests bearing the inscription “Be Conscious of Your Mental Health”. The tableau served as a visual appeal to the global audience to prioritise mental well-being and break the silence surrounding mental health challenges.

Following the performances, Mr. Dawodu, representing the Provost, participated in a panel discussion on “Mental Health: The Stigma Associated with It and Panacea to the Silent Killer.” During the discourse, he highlighted the need for continuous mental health education, the inclusion of psychosocial counselling in health institutions, and the development of community-based support systems as sustainable solutions to mental health challenges in Nigeria and beyond.

Impressed by LASCOHET’s outstanding performance and intellectual contribution, the International Spokesman of the Association praised the College’s commitment to health education and advocacy. He further announced plans to partner with LASCOHET as a special-status partner institution under the auspices of the United Nations, with opportunities for student scholarships and institutional collaborations.

Expressing gratitude on behalf of the Provost, Mr. Dawodu commended the organisers and reaffirmed LASCOHET’s mission to advance mental health awareness through education, creative expression, and community engagement.

This recognition not only underscores LASCOHET’s leadership in health-related education but also highlights its growing reputation as a centre for innovation, compassion, and global partnership in Nigeria’s health sector.
