The Chief Judge of Lagos State, Hon. Justice Kazeem Alogba, has given assurance that the judiciary will always protect the fundamental human rights of citizens.
Justice Alogba spoke during a courtesy visit of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) his office, emphasising the importance of the organisation in society, just as he frowned at the breach of fundamental rights of any individual.
Revealing that as part of ensuring the human rights of citizens are protected, magistrates in the State have been visiting police stations to release those who have been unlawfully detained and minor offenders who have not been charged to court while also making recommendations in accordance with the rules of law.
He also disclosed that Lagos State Judiciary was recently adjudged the best in the jurisdiction of enforcement of fundamental human rights.
Alogba advised the committee to continue being a human rights watchdog, assuring them of the judiciary’s support in accordance with the law.
Responding, the Chairman of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) Lagos State Branch, Mr. Kehinde Adeoye, made it known that the organisation is a non-governmental, independent body that focuses on ensuring the full implementation of human rights.
Adeoye noted that December 10 is a day set aside for World Human Rights, adding that the organisation is ready to collaborate with the judiciary and other institutions with similar objectives.
