In a strategic move to bolster emergency preparedness and promote a disaster-resilient environment, the Lagos State Command and Control Centre (LSCCC) recently hosted a delegation from Agege Local Government led by the Acting Executive Chairman, Honourable Vinod Abdulganiu Obasa.
The courtesy visit, held at the LSCCC headquarters, focused on strengthening collaboration between both entities in the areas of disaster risk reduction, intelligence sharing, and emergency response.
During the engagement, the General Manager of LSCCC, Mr. Femi Giwa, commended Hon. Obasa for his proactive leadership and commitment to public safety. He reiterated that the Local Government plays a vital role in strengthening the disaster management system of communities, as the local government is the closest tier of governance to the people, serving as the first line of defence whenever disasters occur.
He further asserted that Local authorities have a better understanding of the specific hazards, risks, vulnerabilities, and resources within their communities and this positions them to take practical steps in reducing disaster risks and building community resilience.
The GM recommended that the Local Government should:
Procure Light Rescue Equipment to support rapid and effective emergency response at the grassroots level, Establish a Local Emergency Management Committee to provide a structured platform for community-based disaster risk management, Establish a Community Emergency Response Team for swift and effective response to emergencies/disasters in the local communities, among others.
The LSCCC Boss stressed that the Centre will assist in building the preparedness and response capability of the Community Emergency Response Team after inauguration as well as enhance the capacity of the Local Emergency Management Committee to effectively coordinate rapid response to incidents.
The collaboration, according to him, underscores a shared commitment to proactive governance, improved service delivery, and enhanced public safety within Agege Local Government Area.
The partnership will also enable both LSCCC and Agege LGA to identify potential vulnerabilities, streamline communication channels, and build a resilient community through coordinated planning and timely response mechanisms.
The Lagos State Command and Control Centre, which is the custodian of the emergency toll-free line 112/767, remains committed to fostering strategic partnerships that will lead to sustainable development, effective disaster management, and a safer environment for all residents.
