A Town Planner in the employ of the Lagos State Government, Tpl. Risikat Adebukola Bello, has emerged as the first Chairman of Women in Town Planning at the bi-annual meeting of the Association of Women Town Planners, held recently in Portharcourt, Rivers State.

Tpl. Bello got the nod of her colleagues to lead the association because of their belief in her capacity honed by decades of practice as a staff of the Lagos State Government in various capacities including the headship of the Lagos State Planning Information Centre (LASPIC) and the Physical Planning Department of the State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development.

As the Unit head for LASPIC, she played an important role in the ongoing Planning Permit automation, a process designed to speed up Approval of Planning Permit applications and further enhance the ease of doing business in Lagos State.

In her acceptance speech, Tpl. Bello promised to bring her wealth of experience to bear on the new assignment by uplifting women in town planning to more enviable status in order to maintain the excellence associated with Lagos State.

Congratulating her on the feat, the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Idris Salako and the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, Engr. Abiola Kosegbe expressed confidence in her ability to lead the association to the promised land and improve the image of women practising as Town Planners.

“Your emergence as the pioneer Chairman of the Association of Women in Town Planning has again demonstrated the leadership role of our State. We have a lot to showcase for others to take a cue from, particularly as regards Urban Planning. As the leader of this association, you embody the spirit and expertise of Lagos. I am sure you will not let us down”, Salako said.

Tpl. Risikat Bello joined the Lagos State Civil Service in 1992 as a Higher Technical Officer and with great commitment to duty rose to her present position as Director of Town Planning, where she currently heads the Physical Planning Department. She became a Registered Member of the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners on the 25th October, 2001 and a Fellow of the Institute on 27th October, 2018.
