Four men have been remanded in a Lagos Correctional Service custody for attacking officers of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC).
The defendants Etem Linus, Remond Ogalego, Nwagli Sunday and Wisdom Obinna were remanded following their failure to meet the bail condition granted them by Magistrate H. B. Magaji of an Ogba magistrates’ court.
The defendants were arraigned before the court for allegedly attacking officers of LAGESC.
The defendants were alleged to have attacked the officials with stones and other dangerous weapons from the flyover bridge on Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, Ikeja while dislodging street traders around the area.
The defendants were alleged to have inflicted serious head injuries on an officer, Oshinowo Mojeed, while others sustained various degree of injuries contrary to Section 411 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State.
The defendants pleaded not guilty.
Magistrate Magaji granted them bail with one surety.
Meanwhile LAGESC Corps Marshall Mrs Gbemisola Akinpelu, has condemned the incessant attacks on its personnel carrying out their official duties of ensuring the cleanliness of the environment.
This is contained in a statement by the agency’s Public Affairs Unit Officer, Adebayo Kehinde.
Akinpelu, while speaking at the command’s office at Bolade-Oshodi, warned that such attacks on its men would no longer be tolerated by the state government.
The Corps Marshal decried the spate of attacks, saying “it is one too many of attacks on enforcement officers in the state, which has resulted in the loss of lives and injuries on its personnel while trying to ensure that our roads, walkways and road setbacks on major highways in the state are free of illegal trading activities and street hawking which mostly impedes free flow of human and vehicular movement that often constitute traffic gridlock on our roads.”
She reiterated the agency’s commitment to ensuring the directives of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu that every part of the state be free of any form of environmental nuisances.
Akinpelu, a retired Commissioner of Police, appealed to all market leaders and transport unions to partner with the Agency in the discharge of its statutory responsibilities.
