The draw ceremony for the 2026 Lagos State Challenge Cup delivered a vibrant mix of football, culture, and unity, as stakeholders converged at the Indoor Hall of the National Stadium to officially herald Nigeria’s premier grassroots football competition.
The event spotlighted the leadership of Lagos State Football Association (LSFA) Chairman, Liameed Gafar, whose administration continues to inject renewed direction and momentum into football development across the state. Under his stewardship, the 2026 edition is already shaping up to be one of the most impactful in recent years.
A major highlight was the unveiling of an Eyo masquerade-inspired trophy, donated by 54Footballx and presented by revered royal fathers, Oba Ibrahim Olasunkanmi Lawal-Bello and Oba Abdul Moruf Oyekunle Oluwa. The culturally symbolic trophy drew admiration from attendees, reflecting Lagos’ rich heritage while elevating the competition’s identity and prestige.
Speaking at the ceremony, Gafar described the tournament as a unifying platform that goes beyond football. He reaffirmed the association’s commitment to delivering a well-organised competition capable of discovering new talents and inspiring the next generation of players.
The ceremony attracted a distinguished audience, including ex-internationals led by Waidi Akanni, club owners, referees, administrators, media practitioners, and government representatives—underscoring a shared commitment to football development in Lagos.
In a joint appreciation, the LSFA and tournament sponsor, Sheriff Tajudeen, commended stakeholders for their continued support. Special recognition was also given to the royal fathers for unveiling the trophy, as well as facilitators of the Media Officers Training seminar for equipping club media personnel ahead of the competition.
The association further acknowledged the contributions of its Congress members, the Lagos State Referees Association, and elders-emeritus for their sustained guidance and dedication to the growth of the game.
With 77 teams confirmed and enhanced incentives—including match balls, increased prize money, and global live streaming powered by Cloud Sports—anticipation is building ahead of kickoff.
As matches commence on Sunday across designated centres, attention will turn to Lagos for what promises to be a celebration of football excellence, cultural pride, and unity.
