The Lagos State Government on Monday dislodged some illegal occupants in Ijegun while it also announcing plans to demolish shanties in the area.

The Lagos Commissioner, Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab in a statement on X said this is in continuation of the government’s sanitisation of school environments across the state.

The authorities decided to visit ljegun and Abaranje in lkotun following up on last week’s visit to the areas.

“In our renewed effort to sanitise school environments across the State, today, I instructed the Special Squad Operatives of Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) or (KAI) to dislodge street traders and demolish illegal shanties on the perimeter fence of Ategbo Nursery and Primary School ljegun Road, Old garage bus stop, Ijegun,” Wahab wrote.

“The Special Squad also undertook enforcement action at the Local Government Primary School, Pako bus stop, Abaranje road, lkotun Lagos State for the same reason.”

Wahab said the operation followed the expiration of served statutory notices on clear breaches of the provision of the 2017 Lagos State Environmental Management Planning law as it concerns illegal structures by the perimeter fence/roadside and erecting structures on the drainage alignment.

According to him, the enforcement has become expedient following an observed widespread trend that is not only worrisome but very unacceptable in schools environment in Lagos state which must be tackled headlong.

Last Thursday, illegal kiosks built on drainage setbacks beside Silver Springs Schools, Abaranje Road, Ikotun were evacuated by the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) Enforcement Team and the Lagos Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources (LasgMOE) Monitoring officers.

Wahab said the monitoring officers were directed to request the principal of the school take over the setback and then beautify it in accordance with the Greener Lagos policy of the governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu-led administration.

Roseline Ogunro’s report, Radio Nigeria Announcer on Duty the day General Murtala Mohammed was killed

I was the early morning duty continuity announcer on Friday 13 February 1976, exactly 45 years ago. My shift commenced at 5:30 am and would have finished at 11:30 am. Things were going on smoothly until about 7:20 am when a rather scruffy man with red eyes as though under the influence of alcohol or other substances, in army uniform and armed with a gun, walked into the continuity studio with another army officer and one of my colleagues, a producer in the Hausa Service of Voice of Nigeria. The scruffy officer was later to announce that he was Dimka. He said as they came in, ‘any resistance from these people, shoot’. He then demanded to use my microphone. I got up and he took over my seat and my microphone. He then announced that there had been a coup and that the Head of State, General Murtala Mohammed had been killed. He proceeded to make the infamous ‘dawn to dusk curfew’. He read from a scrap of paper. After the announcement he asked if I had military (martial music) to which I said no. The colleague who accompanied the officers left immediately and returned quite quickly with a compilation of martial music records possibly from the music library. He seemed to have pre-compiled them. I was commanded to play them after Dimka’s announcement. I was not overly scared at this point. I thought to myself, ’just do as you are told’ especially as the man was armed with a gun.
