The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State has warned the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to stop unleashing violence on innocent Lagosians. The party also advised the PDP governorship candidate, Jide Adediran, to thread softly and play the game of politics with decorum.

According to the ruling party, the ugly incident in the Surulere local government, which left in its wake many injured victims and three people reportedly died, called for caution.

A statement by Lagos APC Publicity Secretary, Hon Seye Oladejo, condemned the unwarranted and unprovoked resort to violence in the name of the electioneering campaign. The party alleged that in broad daylight, PDP thugs fired guns at their hapless victims who ran for dear lives. Oladejo said: “Lagos cherishes its enviable status as the safest state in the country; a result of long-running and painstaking investment in security.

“We view this attack as a ploy to instill fear in the hearts of would-be voters as we count down to the elections.” The party official said it is pathetic that those seeking to govern the state on the platform of the opposition party could be promoting violence to disrupt public peace. He added: “The PDP has been busy in the past few days, crying in the media that their posters were being torn. Unknown to the public, they perfected evil plans, which manifested at his rally.

“While we can imagine the untold misery and frustration that the PDP’s faltering campaign may cause to the party, it ought not to result in the thirst for the blood of potential voters. We hereby call on law enforcement agencies to thoroughly investigate the incident, bring the culprits to book and beef up security across the state with the obvious desperation of the opposition PDP in order to forestall a reoccurrence. We urge Lagosians to remain calm and law abiding as the state government remains irrevocably committed to its onerous duty of ensuring the safety of lives and properties of all and sundry.”

Reacting to the incident, the Lagos State Government said “security agencies are investigating the video, which has gone viral on the social media. We believe they will fish out and prosecute the evil actors, who are believed to be henchmen of the opposition PDP. We condemn this savagery that has portrayed our state, the safest in Nigeria, in a bad light. That is not who we are; we are civilized and cultured.

The statement signed by Gbenga Omotoso, Commissioner, Information and Strategy, added that “following advice from competent sources, including elders and respectable Lagosians, we will henceforth shun any forum that may require us being together with PDP and its agents of violence. Consequently, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu regrets to announce that he will not be participating at The Platform Governorship Debate of January 29, 2023.

“The Governor holds Pastor Poju Oyemade and the Covenant Christian Church family in high esteem and cherishes future opportunities to engage the congregation and render accounts of his stewardship to them as integral parts of the Lagos electorate. We will never be found in the company of those to whom the lives of innocent Lagosians mean nothing. Mr Sanwo-Olu won’t share a podium with them.”
