The Lagos State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has reacted to the reported defection of former presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing the move as the formal unveiling of what it termed a “coalition of grievance and convenience.”

In a statement issued on Tuesday by its spokesman, Mogaji (Hon.) Seye Oladejo, the party said Mr. Obi’s decision did not represent political evolution but rather confirmed a long-anticipated alignment driven by personal ambition and opposition to the Nigerian state.

The party congratulated the ADC on what it described as the culmination of prolonged efforts to bring Mr. Obi into its fold, adding that the defection had finally laid to rest claims of political independence previously associated with the former Anambra State governor. According to the APC, both the timing and venue of the declaration were deliberate and symbolically calculated.

The Lagos APC further argued that Mr. Obi’s political history showed a pattern of frequent party changes, insisting that his latest move merely reinforced what it called “convenience politics disguised as principle.” The party described the ADC as lacking ideological depth, portraying it instead as a platform for “recycled ambitions, serial aspirants, and electoral disappointments.”
According to the statement, Mr. Obi’s entry into the ADC has confirmed suspicions that the coalition was structured around a predetermined outcome, with internal democracy and broader consultation allegedly sidelined. The party also alleged that the coalition’s moral posture had collapsed under the weight of personal ambition.

The APC raised concerns over what it described as the coalition’s failure to clearly condemn terrorism and insecurity across the country, warning that silence on such critical national issues amounted to complicity and undermined any claim to moral authority or national leadershipIn contrast, the party defended the record of the APC-led Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, stating that the administration remains focused on economic stabilization, dismantling criminal networks, restoring investor confidence, and rebuilding weakened institutions.

The statement accused the emerging coalition of relying on propaganda, exaggeration, and misinformation, arguing that hardship and national challenges were being politicized due to the absence of credible policy alternatives.

Reaffirming confidence in the ruling party, the Lagos APC said the Renewed Hope Agenda remained irreversible and assured Nigerians that alliances formed “against the progress of the nation” would ultimately fail at the polls.

“The future belongs to builders, not professional complainers; to patriots, not political tourists,” the statement concluded.
