The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Plateau State said it has rejected 11, 321 applications because of multiple registrations in its ongoing third quarter Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise in the State.
INEC also said it has so far registered 279, 323 voters since the commencement of the third quarter CVR in the state.
The electoral umpire also informed it has expanded the number of polling units in the state, which was hitherto 2, 631 to 4, 989, showing a 95% increase (2, 358)”.
Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, Mallam Hussaini Halilu Pai, disclosed this while briefing journalists at the State Headquarters of INEC in Jos, the State Capital.
Pai said, “Utilising the newly converted polling units helps to avoid voters trekking distances on election day, especially when there is a restriction on vehicular movements.
He added that the newly converted polling units help to “decongest the former polling units and save time on election day.
The REC urged citizens who wish to replace their damaged or lost PVCs to take advantage of the Continuous Voter Registration now that is closer to them.
According to him, “The Commission designed the CVR in four quarters; so far we are in the third quarter which will terminate 22nd March 2022. It will be suspended to allow for the display of claims and objections.
“The fourth and final quarter will commence on 11th April to 30th June 2022. By this the Commission has dedicated a whole year from June 2021 to June 2022 for the registration exercise”, he explained.
Pai maintained that “Also, 11, 321 applicants have been rejected because they have previously registered (multiple- more than one Registration).
He advised those who pre-registered online to ensure they go for physical registration before INEC Registration Officers to complete the exercise at the various Registration Areas, Local Government and State Registration centres across the state.
The REC urged eligible voters to take advantage of the Continuous Voter Registration to ensure they are registered to enable them participate in the 2023 polls coming up on the 25th February and 11th March 2023.
