The Headquarters of the 81 Division, Nigerian Army, has issued a preliminary statement on the tragic death of a soldier who was attacked while on internal security duty in the Imota area of Ikorodu, Lagos State.
According to the Division, the incident occurred on 16 November 2025 at about 4:00 p.m., when the soldier attempted to calm a chaotic situation. In the process, he was violently assaulted by a man described as mentally unstable, who struck him on the head with a heavy log.
Other soldiers at the scene quickly intervened, neutralizing the attacker and recovering the soldier’s rifle. The injured soldier was immediately evacuated to the Ikorodu General Hospital, where he was later confirmed dead. He has since been laid to rest in accordance with Islamic rites, with the Acting Commanding Officer and other officers in attendance.
The Army has expressed its condolences to the family, colleagues, and loved ones of the fallen soldier, acknowledging his service and sacrifice. An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident has been initiated.
The 81 Division also appealed to the public for calm and vigilance, urging citizens to promptly report suspicious activities to security agencies. It further advised the media and the public to allow the investigation to progress without unnecessary speculation or misinformation.
