Ikeja Local Govt Intensifies Fight Against Tuberculosis with Sensitization and Free Screening Programme

As part of ongoing efforts to promote quality healthcare and improve the well-being of residents, the Chairperson of Ikeja Local Government, Mrs. Fausat Temitope Dauda, on Tuesday led a Tuberculosis (TB) Sensitization and Screening Programme at the Ikeja Local Government Secretariat.

The initiative, organized in collaboration with Lagos State Health District VI, aimed to educate residents and council staff on the prevention, management, and treatment of tuberculosis, while encouraging early detection through regular screening.

Speaking at the event, Mrs. Dauda urged residents to take advantage of available screening opportunities and not ignore symptoms associated with tuberculosis. She emphasized that TB is a curable disease and encouraged individuals diagnosed with the illness to promptly access treatment and strictly adhere to their prescribed medication regimen.

The Chairperson also called on members of the public to avoid stigmatizing persons living with tuberculosis, stressing the importance of providing support and encouragement throughout their treatment process.

“Together, we can eliminate tuberculosis from our communities and build a healthier society for all,” she stated.

The Medical Officer of Health for Ikeja Local Government, Dr. Abidemi Awodele, delivered an informative presentation on the causes, symptoms, prevention, and treatment of tuberculosis. She advised residents to seek immediate medical attention if they experience persistent cough, unexplained weight loss, night sweats, or related symptoms, noting that early diagnosis greatly improves treatment outcomes.

The programme featured health education sessions, interactive engagements, and free tuberculosis screening services for participants, all geared towards increasing public awareness and reducing the spread of the disease.

Dignitaries present at the programme included the Vice Chairman of Ikeja Local Government, Hon. Abisola Omisore; Hon. Folashade Fajobi, Special Adviser on Health; the Council Manager, Mrs. Taiwo Juliana Odubeko; members of the Legislative Arm led by the Leader of the House, Hon. Rasheed Adisa Ogunseye; Supervisors, Special Advisers, management staff, and healthcare professionals.

Commending the Chairperson for championing the initiative, the Executive Chairman of Ikeja Local Government, Comrade Akeem Olalekan Dauda (AKOD), reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to supporting programmes that promote preventive healthcare, healthy living, and the overall welfare of residents.

He reiterated that the local government would continue to prioritize public health interventions aimed at safeguarding the lives of the people and improving healthcare outcomes across the council area.

The event concluded with a renewed call for collective action in the fight against tuberculosis, underscoring the message that together, the disease can be eradicated.
