The Executive Chairman of Ikeja Local Government, Comrade Akeem Olalekan Dauda (AKOD), has called on Nigerian youths to take a leading role in shaping the nation’s future, stressing that sustainable development can only be achieved when citizens actively participate in governance rather than remain passive observers.
Comrade Dauda made the charge yesterday while delivering the keynote address at the 2nd Annual Citizen-Focused Governance Dialogue held at the MUSON Centre, Lagos. The event, themed “Citizenship, Not Spectatorship,” was organised by The Nigerian Factor in partnership with ipComm and Lagos Talks 91.3 FM.
Drawing from his personal experiences in leadership and public service, the Ikeja LG Chairman underscored the importance of responsibility, service and civic engagement in nation-building. He emphasized that meaningful national progress is driven by citizens who place long-term community development above short-term personal benefits.
“Young people must understand that nationhood thrives when citizens choose consistent service over selfish expectations,” he said. “Personal benefits will naturally follow when we commit ourselves to humanity and community growth.”
Comrade Dauda urged young Nigerians to remain resilient in the face of current national difficulties, noting that patriotism, discipline and focus remain indispensable ingredients for both personal advancement and national stability.
He further stressed that governance is a shared responsibility, encouraging youths to participate in democratic processes, volunteerism, community service, informed dialogue and constructive civic engagement — actions he described as “the lifeblood of an accountable society.”
The Chairman also challenged leaders at all levels of government to strengthen systems that foster youth inclusion, inspire public confidence and uphold meritocracy in governance.
Comrade Dauda commended the organizers for sustaining the platform, describing it as a vital avenue for nurturing responsible, enlightened and participatory citizenship.
In attendance at the dialogue were the Vice Chairman of Ikeja Local Government Council, Hon Abisola Omisore, the Chief of Staff, Mr Adeyi Adeniyi, Chief (Mrs.) Funmibi Akinduro, Chief Isiaka Apena, and other notable personalities who accompanied the Chairman to the event.
