The House of Representatives on Tuesday convened an emergency plenary session to deliberate on and pass the Amended Electoral Act Bill.
The special sitting, called to address outstanding legislative concerns surrounding the proposed amendments, witnessed robust debate among lawmakers. Initial objections were raised by members of the opposition, particularly regarding Clause 60 of the Electoral Act, which had generated considerable controversy.
Despite the disagreements, the House proceeded to consider the disputed clause and, following deliberations, approved the provision as part of the amended legislation.
A member representing Ikeja Federal Constituency, Rt Hon James Abiodun Faleke, disclosed the development in a statement shared on his official Facebook page, noting that the emergency plenary underscored the legislature’s resolve to address critical electoral reforms.
The passage of the amended bill marks a significant step in the ongoing review of Nigeria’s electoral framework, with further legislative and executive processes expected to follow in accordance with constitutional requirements.
