Gunshots rock Onosa, Lagos Police arrest own officers after shooting

The Lagos State Police Command says peace has returned to Onosa Community in the Elemoro area of Lagos State after a violent confrontation between residents and police officers left three people injured.

The Lagos State Police Command says peace has returned to Onosa Community in the Elemoro area of Lagos State after a violent confrontation between residents and police officers left three people injured.

In a statement issued on Friday, Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed that six officers on routine patrol from Elemoro Division were attacked by “an irate mob” in the early hours of the day.

“In the course of ensuring their own safety, the officers used their firearms, resulting in three individuals sustaining injuries,” Hundeyin said.

He added that the victims were immediately taken to a hospital for medical attention.

Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, swiftly moved to the scene with additional officers to de-escalate the situation and clear barricades that had obstructed traffic.

“The swift intervention led to the removal of all barricades, restoring the free flow of traffic in the affected area,” the statement read.

Jimoh, according to the command, went further into the community to engage with local youth and leaders to calm tensions.

“He also extended an invitation to these leaders for continued dialogue to address concerns and prevent future occurrences,” Hundeyin disclosed.

The Command confirmed that the officers who discharged their weapons have been taken into custody as investigations into the incident commence.

“The Lagos State Police Command is committed to a thorough and transparent inquiry to establish the facts surrounding the event,” Hundeyin stressed.

Meanwhile, a “significant police presence” has been maintained in the area to ensure peace. Residents were urged to remain calm and work with law enforcement.

“The Command urges residents to remain calm, cooperate with law enforcement, and refrain from actions that could disrupt public safety,” Hundeyin said, noting that further updates would be provided as investigations progress.
