Mojisola Meranda, the newly elected Speaker of the Lagos House of Assembly, has been endorsed by the Governance Advisory Council, in the wake of Mudashiru Obasa’s ouster as Speaker, amid allegations of fraud and gross abuse of power.
Following almost unanimous support from lawmakers for Mr Obasa’s impeachment, Ms Meranda took the reins of the assembly on Monday, emphasizing the imperative to safeguard the assembly’s integrity.
Ms Meranda, who spoke to journalists during her visit to council members on Tuesday, stated that she came to solicit their support and brief the council on the latest developments in the assembly.
“I am here to brief them about what happened at the House of Assembly yesterday, to seek their blessings which we have gotten,” Ms Meranda said,
The Governance Advisory Council (GAC), the highest decision-making body of the All Progressives Congress in Lagos, was formed and is headed by President Bola Tinubu, the party’s National Leader. It comprises prominent stakeholders responsible for overseeing the party’s state affairs.
Furthermore, the GAC’s endorsement of Ms Meranda occurred after Gbenga Akosile, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s aide, refuted the governor’s involvement in Mr Obasa’s impeachment.
According to Mr. Akosile, Mr. Sanwo-Olu’s primary concern was addressing significant governance issues impacting the lives of Lagosians, with Mr. Obasa’s impeachment being a matter for the legislature.
