Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has announced a ₦2 billion intervention to revive the historic Akwete weaving industry in Abia State, describing the centuries-old textile tradition as a priceless cultural heritage that deserves preservation and global recognition.
Speaking during a visit to Akwete community in Ukwa East Local Government Area, the First Lady urged Nigerians to embrace locally made fabrics and support indigenous industries as a pathway to economic growth and cultural preservation.
She disclosed that the ₦2 billion fund will be used to establish a modern Akwete Weaving and Research Centre aimed at boosting production, preserving traditional weaving techniques, creating employment opportunities, and attracting more young people to the craft.
Mrs. Tinubu also encouraged political leaders and other prominent Nigerians to proudly wear Akwete fabric at national and international events to showcase Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage to the world.
She added that if President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is re-elected in 2027, she would proudly wear an outfit made from Akwete fabric at his inauguration.
In recognition of her commitment to preserving Abia’s cultural heritage, the First Lady was honoured with the traditional title of “Ugo Nwanyi Abia.”
Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, hailed the intervention as a landmark investment that will accelerate efforts to transform the renowned Akwete weaving industry into a globally competitive textile brand.
