Their opening match saw the Flamingos secure a dominant 4-1 victory over New Zealand. Shakirat Abidemi Moshood opened the scoring just two minutes into the match, converting a pass from Harmony Chidi.

Khadijat Taiwo Adegoke doubled Nigeria’s lead in the 13th minute, assisted by Faridat Abdulwahab. Abdulwahab added the third goal in the 28th minute with Moshood providing the assist.

The fourth goal came in the 55th minute, courtesy of Taiwo Tewogbola Afolabi, assisted by Adegoke. New Zealand managed to pull one back in the 60th minute through Hannah Aimee Saxon, assisted by Ela Jerez.

The Nigerian side is aiming to surpass their third-place finish at the 2022 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in India.

In the other Group A match, Ecuador secured a 2-0 win against the hosts, the Dominican Republic. Jaslym Esther Valverde Tenerio opened the scoring in the 14th minute and added a second in the 29th minute, with the assist coming from Camacho Roldan.

The hosts were unable to break through Ecuador’s defense as the South Americans sealed the victory.

Looking ahead, the Flamingos are scheduled to take on Ecuador in their next group match on Saturday, October 19, 2024, at the Cibao Stadium.

The game will kick off at 9 PM Nigerian time and will be available to watch on FIFA+ and StarTimes.
