FG declares Tuesday, Wednesday public holidays for Eid-el-Fitr

The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, 9th and Wednesday, 10th April, 2024 as public holidays to mark Eid-el-Fitr celebration.

The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, 9th and Wednesday, 10th April, 2024 as public holidays to mark Eid-el-Fitr celebration.

The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government on Saturday congratulated all Muslim Ummah for the successful completion of the fasting in the holy month of Ramadan.

Eid-el-Fitris the earlier of the two official holidays celebrated within Islam (the other being Eid al-Adha). Eid-el-Fitr is celebrated by Muslims worldwide because it marks the end of the month-long dawn-to-sunset fasting of Ramadan.

The celebration falls on the first day of Shawwal in the Islamic calendar; this does not always fall on the same Gregorian day, as the start of any lunar Hijri month varies based on when the new moon is sighted by local religious authorities.

The holiday is known under various other names in different languages and countries around the world.
