The Holy Month of Ramadan is a time for worshiping Allah through fasting, listening to words of exaltation from the Holy Quran, and embodying the attributes of piety.
These qualities and more were discussed at the Lagos Education District IV 19th Annual Ramadan Lecture with the theme: “Responsibilities of Stakeholders in Character Development: The Islamic Perspective”, held recently at Government College Hall, Eric Moore, Surulere.
The Tutor-General/Permanent Secretary of Education District IV, Mr. Olusegun Osinaike, while welcoming guests to the occasion, described the season as a period of purification and eliminating vices and negative behaviors, stressing that Ramadan is a time to care for the less privileged in society.
The first guest speaker, Dr. Sidiq Uthman Okanlawon, a lecturer at the Department of Religion and Peace Studies, Lagos State University (LASU), delivered a lecture on the Responsibilities of Stakeholders in character development.
Dr. Sidiq highlighted parents as major stakeholders in shaping a child’s character, emphasising their role in providing core values like independence, self-awareness, trust, patriotism, and empathy through leading by example at home.
He urged parents to take proper care of their children, expose them to Western and Islamic education, and fulfill their responsibilities alongside the efforts of the government to provide a conducive learning environment and access to education.
The second guest speaker, Fadilatu Sheik Abdul Wasiu Moshefolohun, spoke on the topic: “The Fear of God in the Month of Ramadan”, stressing the importance of constantly fearing Allah and caring for the less privileged to deter crime and uphold righteousness in society.
As part of the Ramadan Lecture, a prayer session was held for the Nation, State, Management and Staff of the District, and students.
