Decision on minimum wage will be taken on Monday – Ngige

Chris Ngige, Minister of Labour and Employment.

Nigeria Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, said the Federal Government of Nigeria will decide on a new national minimum wage on Monday.

The Minister made this statement on Friday. He said an “enlarged meeting of all key stakeholders in the government circle at both federal and states has been scheduled for Monday.”

Negotiations have been at a deadlock with labour unions insisting on a N30,000 per month minimum wage, the federal government proposing N24,000 while state governors are holding out for N20,000.

Presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina said on Thursday that the N30,000 minimum wage is not possible due to the inability of  governors to fund the money the union is requesting.

“So if they can’t pay N18,000 and labour is asking for N30,000 and they refuse to come lower, there may be a stalemate which will not be good for the country.

“I think in the spirit of negotiation, labour should not insist on N30,000,”  he said

Labour unions have threatened that they will embark on indefinite strike from November 6.

In reaction to the indefinite strike threat from the union, the federal government said it will invoke a no work no pay if labour goes ahead with its planned strike action.
