Dateline 2027: Anatomy of an Unworkable Coalition

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has taken note of renewed activities within opposition ranks, particularly the widely publicised “coalition talks” being projected as a major political strategy ahead of the 2027 general elections. Beyond the fanfare and manufactured optimism, the APC describes the initiative as a fragile arrangement weighed down by personal ambitions, deep-seated mistrust, and irreconcilable differences.

According to the party, what is being presented as a coalition is, in reality, a gathering of perennial presidential hopefuls, none willing to subordinate personal interests to a collective goal. The APC noted that the arrangement lacks ideological cohesion, moral consensus, and a shared national vision, aside from a common desire to seize power. It stressed that while genuine coalitions are sustained by compromise, this one appears crippled by entitlement.

Recent public exchanges among opposition figures, the APC said, have further exposed internal cracks, with ultimatums and preconditions replacing dialogue and consensus. The party argued that open demands for guaranteed presidential or vice-presidential tickets before alignment underscore the transactional nature of the talks, making the proposed coalition unsustainable.

The APC also pointed to recent appeals by opposition leaders urging their supporters to refrain from attacking one another as evidence of deep internal discord. According to the party, a coalition that must publicly plead for restraint among its own followers, even before taking shape, has already succumbed to internal instability.

The presence of multiple power blocs within the same political space, each convinced of its own dominance, the APC noted, renders the project unworkable. Drawing from historical precedents, the party maintained that coalitions formed out of convenience rather than conviction often end in fragmentation and collapse.

In contrast, the APC reaffirmed its position as a tested political platform with the capacity to manage diversity, resolve internal differences through democratic processes, and articulate a coherent governance agenda. The party stated that while the opposition is preoccupied with internal disputes and public posturing, the APC remains focused on governance, reforms, and consolidating the gains of the Renewed Hope Agenda under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The party concluded that the 2027 elections will not be determined by press conferences, social media campaigns, or hastily assembled alliances, but by performance, stability, and clear direction. It maintained that Nigerians will ultimately choose proven leadership over political experimentation.

The statement was signed by the Lagos APC Spokesman, Mogaji (Hon.) Seye Oladejo, and dated January 23, 2026.
